Tukang is a Malay word to describe a traditional craftsman. Three tukangs, Adiguru Muhaimin Hasbollah, Elias Robani and Isma Sazali Rosti speak about the process of building the Malay timber House of Malaysia- a sophisticated form of rural domestic architecture consisting of rectangular volumes raised on stilts put together using an interlocking joinery technique known as tanggam.

Challenge

This process took about two months, and we were very fortunate to have found three who were willing to be interviewed at their workshops.

We quickly drafted our project proposal and storyline.

From the outset, we decided that the exploration and outputs of client’s research will be in the form of short films featuring interviews with building craftspersons whose work is rooted in craft.

The filming of the Tukang was delayed when many parts of Malaysia was hit by devastating floods that occurred in December 2021. One of the tukangs, Isma, was most affected, with his workshop swept away by rising water. His workshop was reinstated about 6 weeks later and we were generously invited back to continue filming.

Goal

The Tukang film was well received, hitting almost a thousand views within 3 days of releasing on the project’s YouTube channel. It offered a new perspective on the traditional Malay timber house.

Challenge

The pandemic, while presenting challenges, also offered unique opportunities.

This project unfolded during the MCO period when the hotel stood vacant, granting us unrestricted access to meticulously capture its stunning landscapes. Prior to the MCO, the hotel boasted full occupancy every day, making this rare glimpse into its tranquil beauty all the more special.

Goal

In each landscape photograph, prioritize showcasing vibrant greens as the focal point.

While architectural elements are important, they should take a secondary role. The primary aim of these photos is to highlight the lush greenery, as they were submitted for a competition and received a nomination for this particular project.

Challenge

The primary objective of this assignment is to prepare the submission for the PAM Awards 2023.

During the initial session, we encountered challenges as the building was adorned with the Selangor flag for Hari Selangor, making it difficult to capture the architectural details and essence. Fortunately, during the second session a month later, despite inclement weather, we were able to achieve our desired shots and successfully capture the essence of the architecture.

Goal

Showcasing the grandeur of the design, with a middle ring seamlessly nestled within the four towers—a true architectural marvel.

Developer PKNS’s national stature and leadership role in the industry are reflected through bold statements seen in Datum Jelatek’s seductive architecture form and innovative green features. Datum Jelatek was features in a CNBC documentary commissioned by Selangor’s Chief Minister to represent the new buzz in the state.

Result

Datum Jelatek is an integrated development with residential, retail and commercial components connected to the Jelatek LRT station in the mature suburb of Datuk Keramat.

A landmark of urban rejuvenation and living, this development aims to renew and transform the neighbourhood into a mixed income community with better living, business and housing standards.

Challenge

Our client sought a video to commemorate a decade of their factory's establishment in Malaysia, celebrating achievements and highlighting their unwavering commitment in producing high-quality gearboxes.

Amidst a tight deadline during the sacred month of Ramadan, we faced the formidable challenge of capturing a video while maintaining pace with the bustling activity of a fast-paced factory.

Precision was paramount as we meticulously synchronized with the factory’s timing and adhered to stringent procedures. We accomplished all filming within a mere three days, demanding an unwavering level of mental and physical acuity and resilience.

Goal

To surpass the quality of the video produced a decade ago, we aim to infuse storytelling, cinematography, and genuine emotions from each operator.

Additionally, our goal is to showcase the talents of local Malaysians employed here.

Result

When presented to potential investors and the Chief Minister, it was a remarkable moment as the factory director commended our work and expressed eagerness for future collaborations.

The video was showcased during the launching event of an extension of future factory that will cater D-CVT transmission production.
